Lacy turned himself in and was eventually released on $151,000 bail on January 12, 2025, according to the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office’s online records viewed by CNN.

A January news release stated that Lacy was “recklessly” driving a 2023 Dodge Charger and illegally passed other vehicles as he drove at a “high rate of speed,” per CNN. He was accused of “crossing the centerline and entering the northbound lane while in a designated No-Passing Zone.”

Police believe Lacy’s reckless driving caused a driver coming from the other direction to swerve over the centerline, and the car then “collided head-on” with another vehicle.

Lacy died at the age of 24 on April 12, 2024, of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to ESPN. He allegedly shot himself in his car during a pursuit by authorities in Houston, Texas, according to a Harris County sheriff’s report.

Harris County authorities said police responded to a call from a female family member who said Lacy had discharged a firearm into the ground during a verbal fight that night. Lacy had fled the scene in a vehicle by the time police arrived, which led them to follow him. The pursuit of Lacy ended when his car crashed.

Kyren Lacy’s Lawyers Claim Video Evidence Proves He Wasn’t Responsible for Fatal Crash

In October 2025, attorney Matt Ory shared new evidence that he believes exonerates Lacy of causing the December 2024 crash.

While talking to local TV station HTV10, Ory acknowledged that Lacy passed four vehicles in a no-passing zone prior to the crash. However, he said that evidence from the Lafourche Parish District Attorney’s Office found that Lacy returned to the proper lane 92.3 yards before the accident.

According to ESPN, Ory argued that Lacy had enough time to have not triggered the collision.

Louisiana State Police Shared Video Evidence From the Crash

Louisiana State Police then released a video on October 7, 2025, that reiterated their beliefs about Lacy’s involvement in the crash.

“Since the incident occurred, the Louisiana State Police never reported that the green [Dodge] Charger impacted any of the involved vehicles,” the Louisiana State Police department said in the video. “However, all evidence collected supports the conclusion that Lacy’s reckless operation of the green Charger in oncoming traffic triggered the chain of events involving the other drivers, ultimately resulting in the fatal crash.”

The video compiled clips of Lacy driving down the southbound lane. “As the green Dodge Charger returns to the southbound lane,” the narrator said. “Aggressive braking and engine deceleration are immediately followed by a crash that can be heard on surveillance footage.”

Lacy was then seen passing the crash scene as he continued along the highway. One witness said that “a green Charger caused all this,” according to police body cam footage.
