Tyler Robinson Allegedly Explained Why He Killed Charlie Kirk in Texts to Partner, Says Prosecutor

Tyler Robinson allegedly explained why he killed Charlie Kirk in text messages sent to his romantic partner and roommate, according to Utah County Attorney Jeff Gray.

While announcing the charges that Robinson, 22, is facing for fatally shooting Kirk on Tuesday, September 16, Gray explained that Robinson allegedly texted his roommate after Kirk’s killing at the Utah Valley University on September 10 and told the roommate to “look under my keyboard.”

The roommate, who is reportedly transitioning from male to female and is involved in a romantic relationship with Robinson, found a note under the keyboard that read, “I had the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk and I’m going to take it,” according to the charging document, per People.

The roommate reportedly asked twice if Robinson was being serious, and Robinson allegedly said he was. He added that he was “sorry to involve you” because he intended to keep his involvement in the murder a secret, according to the documents.

After Robinson was asked why he murdered Kirk, he allegedly said, “I had enough of his hatred. Some hate can’t be negotiated out.”

Robinson allegedly began the text conversation with his roommate while he was still near the campus in Orem. He said he intended to get the bolt-action rifle he used in the killing, though he was unable to get it after he dropped it in the woods because “most of that side of town got locked down.”

In the texts, Robinson allegedly said he was worried about not being able to retrieve the rifle, which he received as a gift from his family. “I’m worried what my old man would do if I didn’t bring back grandpas rifle,” he allegedly told his roommates. “I worry about prints I had to leave it in a bush where I changed outfits.”

“How the f–k will I explain losing it to my old man,” he allegedly added.

In addition to allegedly asking his roommate to delete the text exchange, Robinson noted that his dad was asking for “photos of the rifle” after the FBI released images of the firearm used in the killing.

He also allegedly told the roommate that he was turning himself in after his parents recognized him in surveillance imagery of the suspect. Additionally, a family friend who is a sheriff’s deputy allegedly convinced him to turn himself in.

On September 16, Gray also announced that Robinson had been charged with aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm, obstruction of justice, witness tampering and several other counts for the murder of Kirk.

Additionally, the attorney said he intends to seek the death penalty.
