Taylor Swift has finally explained why Ed Sheeran only found out about her engagement to Travis Kelce through Instagram — along with the rest of the world.
Appearing on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on October 6, the Love Story singer was asked why she didn’t tell her longtime friend the big news personally. Swift responded with her trademark humor, saying she had the “perfect explanation.”
She revealed that, since Sheeran “doesn’t have a working phone,” she simply forgot to call him to share the news directly. Instead, he saw the engagement announcement online like everyone else.
The 35-year-old singer also explained that contacting the A Team singer requires a bit of effort: first sending an email, then setting up a FaceTime, and making sure he actually finds an iPad. “You have to give it to him like he’s a child,” she joked to Fallon.
It wasn’t until Sheeran revealed he learned about the news like everyone else that Swift exclaimed, “Oh no, we forgot to call Ed!”

During an appearance on the U.K.’s Hits Radio Breakfast Show on Friday, October 3, to promote her new album The Life of a Showgirl, Swift spoke about what she and Sheeran chatted about during Selena Gomez’s and Benny Blanco wedding on September 27 in Santa Barbara, California.
“I saw [Sheeran] last weekend, actually, at a wedding of one of our best friends,” Swift said, referring to Gomez, 33.
“We were just talking about how much we love when he came out onstage with me at Wembley during the Eras Tour,” she said, throwing it back to Sheeran’s appearance at her London concert in 2024, where they performed their hit track End Game from her 2017 album, Reputation.
Swift also revealed that the two longtime pals often discuss their music while “rehearsing or writing or working together.” She continued, “There’s really like a sort of strange mind-meld thing that happens between us two, and we’ve always had it. We always will.”

During the same interview, radio host Fleur East asked Swift whether Ed Sheeran would perform at her wedding.
“We spoke to Ed Sheeran a few weeks back, and he told us he is constantly asked to perform at people’s weddings. So is he singing at your wedding?” East asked.
“Oh, it would be hard to keep him from it, I think,” Swift said. “That’s the thing, he’s like, ‘I’m always being asked to sing at weddings.’ It’s like, ‘Ed, if there is a stage, you know you’ll be on it.’ He knows what people want, and he wants to give people what they want.”
