Prince Harry Says He and Meghan Markle Lived in Canada for 6 Weeks “Before Anybody Found Out”

In a new interview, Prince Harry revealed that he spent six full weeks with wife Meghan Markle and son Prince Archie in Canada before anyone found out after he and Meghan’s exit as working members of the royal family in 2020.

Princess Lilibet wasn’t born yet when the then family of three left the U.K. and royal life for Canada and, eventually, the U.S., where they currently reside in Montecito, California. Speaking on the CTV News special Prince Harry and the Canadian Heroes, which aired the evening of February 13, Harry said that they were able to fly under the radar on Vancouver Island for a lengthy amount of time—especially considering the level of fame Harry and Meghan have.

“We lived there for more than six weeks before anybody found out,” Harry said on the program. “We were bumping into people the whole time—nobody told anybody. Yes, they told other people, but there’s not too much of a media, kind of pap culture on Vancouver Island.”

“Certainly, in 2020, it was amazing for us to be able to be in Canada—Vancouver Island—with Archie and be able to go for hikes and be in amongst the local town and feel protected by that,” he continued.

Harry is currently in Canada for the seventh iteration of the Invictus Games in both Vancouver and Whistler—the first foray into winter sports for the Games, which Harry founded in 2014. It’s actually not the first time the Games have made their way to Canada—they were held in Toronto in September 2017, which was also coincidentally where Harry’s then-girlfriend Meghan had lived for years, filming Suits.

“Canada’s been really good to my wife over all these years, and it’s been really good to us as well,” Harry said, per The Mirror.

Obviously much has changed in Harry and Meghan’s lives since September 2017—two months after their first public appearance as a couple, the pair announced their engagement on November 27; they married in May 2018. They’ve welcomed two kids into their lives, uprooted from the U.K. to Canada to the U.S., and have forged a new life for themselves professionally after leaving their roles as senior royals, including deals with Netflix, Spotify, and Penguin Random House.

“It feels like a full-circle moment,” Harry told Town & Country of bringing the Games back to Canadian soil. “Canada has been so kind to us over the years, and to be back here for another Invictus Games eight years later—married, with two amazing kids—is awesome! Spending time with our Invictus community is always a privilege.”

Harry called expanding into winter sports “a huge milestone” for the Games, and called out “the welcome, the hospitality, the scenery—the entire experience has been life-changing for so many” while in Canada.

“We are incredibly grateful to all Canadians for the lifelong memories created during these Games,” he added.

Speaking on the CTV News special, Harry confirmed that he and Meghan were done having kids, telling the program, “I think one or two kids is probably enough—I definitely think that.”

“Having kids is amazing, but it is…it’s a journey every single day, every single week. They just grow and they change,” he added. Of his own two kids Archie and Lilibet, Harry said, “I love the questions that they ask and the experiences and the challenges that they give you. It’s great.”

Meghan joined her husband for the first half of the Games before flying home to California and the kids on February 11. When asked by Town & Country if Harry planned to bring Archie and Lilibet to a future iteration of the Games, he said, “Absolutely. I’d love for them to experience the Invictus spirit firsthand one day.”

“Right now, they’re still young, but we already talk about the importance of resilience, community, and service—everything Invictus represents,” he said.
