No ‘Evidence’ Found That Ohio Student Was ‘Physically Attacked’ Before Death, Says Coroner

A coroner has concluded that there’s no “evidence” that a Cleveland, Ohio college student was “physically attacked” before his death.

Following the death of 21-year old Demartravion “Trey” Reed on Monday, September 15, Bolivar County coroner Randolph Seals, Jr. said that he did not appear to suffer any lacerations, contusions, compound fractures, broken bones or injuries that lead him to believe he was assaulted.

“At this time, there is no evidence to suggest the individual was physically attacked before his death,” Seals, Jr. said, according to local outlet WAPT.

Reed’s body was found hanging from a tree by a faculty member at Delta State University near the pickleball courts Monday morning.

“At 7:32 a.m., the Bolivar County Coroner’s office was notified by the Cleveland Police Department regarding an unresponsive individual on the campus of Delta State University. At 8:08 a.m., representatives from the coroner’s office arrived on the scene and observed and unresponsive subject hanging from a tree,” the Coroner’s office said in a statement, according to the Clarion Ledger. “At this current time, we are conducting a thorough death investigation.”

Shortly after the discovery, all classes were canceled for the remainder of the day. In light of Reed’s death, many students grew concerned for their safety on campus.

“Well, because I am a Black student, hearing that happened to another black student, it really makes me feel unsafe,” DSU student Stacie Hoskins told WAPT. Fellow student Eriana Murphy added, “I do have to walk to class, and I like to go walk the track, and it just, it would be nice to know what happened.”

Similar to the coroner’s findings, DSU police Chief Michael Peeler said investigators were unable to find evidence of foul play. “Pending an investigation, further investigation, and also from the medical examiner’s office, we won’t have more information until that part has been done,” Peeler said, per WAPT.

Meanwhile, Reed’s family members are insisting that authorities conduct a thorough investigation into his death. “Please, do your own research on this. Do not let them sweep nothing under the rug. Enough is enough,” his cousin, who was not named, said per WAPT.

The family also issued a statement about his passing, revealing how important he was to his loved ones.

“Trey was our little quiet light. He was sweet, well mannered, and would give you the world if he could,” the family said in a statement obtained by WAPT. “We ask that you continue to keep our family in your prayers as we continue to navigate through these unforeseen times.”

While DSU classes were canceled for the day, no nearby schools went into lockdown. Meanwhile, police stated that there is no ongoing threat.
