Nina Dobrev and Shaun White have ended their engagement.
The breakup was first reported by People Magazine on Thursday, September 11. A source close to the former couple told the outlet that the split was amicable. “It was a mutual decision, and wasn’t an easy one, but it was made with love and a deep respect for one another,” the insider said.
The breakup comes nearly a year after White proposed to the The Vampire Diaries alum in October 2024 with a 5-carat diamond ring. The pair, who were last photographed holding hands while running errands in Los Angeles on August 31, had seemed stronger than ever—making their split all the more surprising to fans.
Eagle-eyed observers began speculating about trouble in paradise on September 7, when Dobrev walked the red carpet at the Eternity premiere during the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival without her engagement ring. She has also unpinned her engagement announcement from Instagram, which had previously been featured at the top of her profile.
Dobrev, 36, and White, 39, first crossed paths at an awards show in 2012, but didn’t get to know each other until 2019 when they were both booked as speakers at a Florida event organized by motivational speaker Tony Robbins. They began dating shortly after and moved in together at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, quickly becoming a fan-favorite quarantine couple.
White went Instagram official in May 2020, posting photos of Dobrev giving him a haircut during lockdown. He later credited that time together with strengthening their relationship. “Nina’s just been so supportive and so amazing through this whole process for me,” he told People. “Through the pandemic, she was a lifesaver — she really made that time in my life special.”
Nina Dobrev Was ‘Completely Shocked’ By Shaun White’s Proposal
When White popped the question in 2024, the pair delighted fans by sharing the proposal on Instagram. “RIP boyfriend, hello fiancé ,” Dobrev captioned her post, while White wrote, “She said YES
.”
They later revealed to Vogue that White had planned an elaborate surprise proposal in New York City, even tricking Dobrev into thinking she was attending a dinner with Anna Wintour.
“I went into shock. I just froze and stared at him,” Dobrev recalled, adding that she nervously blurted out, “No, no, no!” White laughed that she even asked, “So, wait, Anna’s not here?” before he got down on one knee.
