After finding success with the anthology sci-fi series Black Mirror, Charlie Brooker is back at Netflix with a new crime thriller.
Netflix announced on Tuesday, September 9, that Brooker, 54, will helm a four-part detective series that is currently in production now. The series – which does not yet have a title – is set between the fictional northern city of Bleakford and the streets of London, according to Netflix’s Tudum. The series will follow a tormented detective as he sets out on a relentless mission to catch a ritualistic serial killer.
The upcoming show is described as a “profoundly serious” crime thriller, which has led some fans to believe that it may have a funny twist.
Brooker’s new show will star Paddy Considine (House of the Dragon, MobLand), Georgina Campbell (Barbarian, The Watchers) and Lena Headey (Game of Thrones, The Abandons).

When asked to issue a statement about the show, Brooker continued to hint that the show will have humor by poking fun at the concept of an announcement. “I’m beyond thrilled to be saying these words for the press release,” he told Tudum.
“I’ve dreamt of providing a quote ever since I was a young foetus, and now here I am doing it. I’d pinch myself, but like all of us, I’m terrified that if I do that, I might wake up and discover 2025 has all been a magical dream. Please watch my show. I am begging you.”
The show will be executive produced by Jessica Rhoades and Annabel Jones, as well as co-executive produced by Mark Kinsella and Richard Webb. Meanwhile, Brooker will write the episodes alongside Ben Caudell, Jason Hazeley, Emer Kenny, Daniel Maier and Joel Morris, and additional material will be provided by Victoria Asare Archer.

A release date for the show has not yet been announced, though Brooker promised there will be plenty of “blood and frowning” when the series premieres on the streaming service.
Brooker announced the new project years after he said he was done working in the entertainment field. However, he revealed he now has no plans of going anywhere while speaking to The Hollywood Reporter in April.
“I was really knackered when I said that,” he explained. “During the pandemic, I got a jet washer. I went outside to clean the patio and it was like scraping a lottery ticket. I remember thinking, ‘God, is this more satisfying than my actual life? Is this what I should be doing?’ I lost that feeling after about 25 minutes. I think I’d go nuts pretty quickly. You need to keep chucking wood into the wood chipper or it starts working against you.”
During the same interview, Brooker teased if fans can expect a new season of Black Mirror after season 7 was released in April.
“There’s a degree of freedom within the format. We’ve done a sequel for the first time this season. We’re now looking at old episodes and thinking, ‘How could you revisit that idea?’” Brooker shared. “As long as it’s interesting, I’m allowed to make it and people continue to fucking watch, I’d like to keep making the show.”
