Lauren Alaina opened up to her followers on Instagram about her father, J.J. Suddeth’s passing and why October 6 is such a heavy day for her.
“Today would have been his 13th year of sobriety if he had made it,” the singer said in her video. “He passed away a little over a year ago.”
“But he didn’t make it to his 12th year either, and I’m not even sure about his 11th,” she continued. “He relapsed, and it’s a major contributing factor to why he’s no longer here with us.”
Addressing anyone struggling with similar challenges, Alaina added, “If you’re struggling, there are so many people who love you. Be kind to yourself. Be kind to others. Life is so short. Take care of yourselves. There are people that love you. Don’t ever forget that.”

She continued, “Today I choose to honor him still. He was a proud father and pawpaw. He was a proud Army veteran. He was smart. He was kind. He was the funniest person I have ever met. He always had the answer to any question I had. He is so missed.”
Alaina also reflected on the importance of seeking support, noting that she wishes her father had reached out for help and surrounded himself with people who could support him. The 30-year-old ended her caption saying: “Love yourself and others. Prioritize your mental health. Surround yourself with people who help you in your healing journey. I so wish my dad had done this.
