A 13-year-old boy in Florida has been arrested after he allegedly asked ChatGPT for guidance in how to “kill” his friend.
The Volusia Sheriff’s Office said the boy, who has not been publicly named, was reported to authorities in Deland, Florida for allegedly asking ChatGPT how to kill his friend, according to WFLA.
According to the outlet, the sheriff’s office responded to the school after a Southwestern Middle School deputy reported that the boy allegedly asked ChatGPT, “How to kill my friend in the middle of class.”
The school learned of the search through Gaggle, a school-safety platform that scans school-issued accounts and flags concerning content for the administration.

Law enforcement was brought to the school and questioned the boy, who allegedly said he was “trolling” a friend who had upset him, per the outlet.
“Another ‘joke’ that created an emergency on campus,” the sheriff’s office said of the incident, according to WFLA. The sheriff’s office also urged parents to “talk to your kids so they don’t make the same mistake” as the student in question.
It’s not currently clear when the incident took place, though WFLA reported that the student was arrested on October 1. No other information has been provided about the teen’s arrest, including the charges he is facing.

The recent arrest came shortly after an 11-year-old student at Southwestern Middle School was arrested for allegedly writing “kill list” on his desk at school. NBC Miami reported on September 17 that the student was arrested on a felony charge for threatening fellow students, according to Volusia County Sheriff’s Office.
“If you’re tired of this, imagine how the 99 percent of students, parents, teachers and school staff are feeling,” the sheriff’s office wrote via social media alongside footage of the boy being led into a holding cell while wearing handcuffs. “Today, 11-year-old Caiden Sanford became the latest Volusia County student charged with a felony for threatening his fellow students. Caiden wrote a ‘kill list’ on his desk at Southwestern Middle School because he was angry and having a bad day.”
