Colleen Hoover Addresses ‘It Ends With Us’ Lawsuits In New Interview

Colleen Hoover is speaking out for the first time about the legal turmoil surrounding the film adaptation of her bestselling novel It Ends With Us, acknowledging the fallout that’s followed stars Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni as their dispute spills into the courts. In a new interview published November 20 by Elle, the author offered a measured response to a year and a half of headlines, calling the situation painful and deeply complicated.

Hoover Speaks After Months Of Headlines

The adaptation of Hoover’s novel became engulfed in controversy as Lively and Baldoni filed lawsuits against each other, alleging, among other claims, sexual harassment, a hostile work environment, and the orchestration of smear campaigns. While Hoover served as an executive producer on the movie, she emphasized that she was not on set for most of filming and has intentionally tried to keep her distance from the conflict.

“It feels like a circus,” Hoover said of the public escalation. “When there are real people involved, with real feelings and emotions. This actually truly has impacted some of the actors’ careers in huge ways. And I just find it all around sad.”

Hoover acknowledged that attention typically benefits a book or film, but she described the ongoing accusations as a cloud over what should have been a major milestone in her career. Rather than dive into the fray, the author has chosen to hold back, even as speculation grows online.

“I’m just trying to stay removed from the negativity,” she continued. “I have my own story I could tell… but I don’t want to bring attention to it, and I don’t want to have to put someone else down to lift myself up. So, I’d rather just ignore it and let people think and say what they’re going to say.”

Hoover also commented on the polarized debate across social media, where intense defenses of both sides have hardened into certainty despite limited publicly verified information. “I feel like it’s so big at this point that there’s nothing anyone can say to change whatever opinion people have of it, even though no one has the actual truth,” she said, adding, “Not even me.”

The Personal Toll Behind It Ends With Us

The controversy has been particularly difficult for Hoover’s family because It Ends With Us draws from real, painful history. The novel was inspired by her mother’s decision to leave an abusive marriage when Hoover was a toddler, and the author said seeing the story’s adaptation overshadowed by legal battles has reopened old wounds.

“The book was inspired by [my mom’s] story, and now it gives us PTSD to think about it,” Hoover explained. “I feel awful because I almost feel like she’s gone through more with the aftermath of this film, more pain than she went through with my dad, just seeing the ugliness of it.”

That emotional weight has also made Hoover reconsider how openly she identifies with the project in public. The author admitted that, amid the swirl of accusations and speculation, even mentioning the title can feel fraught. “I’m almost embarrassed to say I wrote it,” she said. “When people ask what I do, I’m just like, ‘I’m a writer. Please don’t ask me what I wrote.’”

What Comes Next In The Legal Battle

While Hoover is keeping her distance, the legal proceedings continue. Lively’s lawsuit against Baldoni remains pending, with a trial currently expected to begin in March 2026. With both stars’ filings active and no resolution in sight, the conversation around the production is unlikely to settle in the near term.

For now, Hoover appears intent on staying out of the public back-and-forth. Her comments underscore the human impact behind the headlines: a cast and crew dealing with a very public rift, and an author grappling with the unexpected consequences of bringing a personal story to the screen. As the case moves toward trial, Hoover’s stance remains consistent—she does not want to add fuel to a dispute she wasn’t present to witness and says she has no desire to elevate one version of events over another.

What started as a career highlight has transformed into a cautionary tale about how quickly a celebrated adaptation can be overtaken by controversy. Hoover’s remarks don’t resolve the questions surrounding what happened on set, but they do add clarity to her position: empathy for those involved, reluctance to litigate the matter in public, and a hope to step back from a narrative that has grown far beyond her control.
