Basketball Player Tiana Mangakahia Dies at 30 Following Battle With Breast Cancer

Tiana Mangakahia, who played basketball for Syracuse University between 2017 and 2021 has passed away at the age of 30.

The Australian athlete was diagnosed with breast cancer in June 2019 and underwent eight rounds of chemotherapy as well as two operations. 

Her family took to Instagram to announce her passing saying “We are heartbroken to share the passing of our beautiful Tiana Mangakahia. She left us on 11/09/2025, surrounded by family, friends and lots of love.”

“Tiana was a shining light who touched the lives of everyone she met with her kindness, strength, and warmth. She fought right till the very end, showing courage and grace beyond words,” the statement continued.

On September 3rd, Mangakahia posted a health update on her Instagram page, writing, “Over the last 5 days my health has taken a negative turn. The cancer has progressed, and it’s now affecting me in ways that are hard to put into words. I’m experiencing a significant physical decline.”

After the player’s college career ended, the 30-year old played for Russia, Australia and France, professionally.

Syracuse athletic director John Wildhack said in a statement, “Syracuse Athletics mourns the passing of Tiana Mangakahia. Tiana defined courage, inspiration and passion. An All-American on the basketball court, she was an even better person off the court.”

Following her college basketball career, Mangakahia was also nominated for the WNBA draft in 2021, but was ultimately not selected.

Earlier this year, the player participated in the third annual Pink Hoops double-header for the Sydney Kings and Sydney Flames. She presented the game ball to both teams and played a key role in raising funds for the McGrath Foundation, continuing her dedication to using her platform to support breast cancer awareness and research.
