Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield, 30, is sharing the story behind how he and his wife, Emily Wilkson, first met — and how it didn’t exactly start off smoothly.
Ahead of the Buccaneers’ Week 7 Monday Night Football game against the Detroit Lions, the couple sat down with ESPN reporter Michelle Beisner-Buck to talk about their relationship.
When asked how it all began, Baker didn’t hold back on the details of his early attempts to win Emily over.
“So, I went to Instagram, hit the follow button. No follow back. Hit the unfollow button, hit the follow again, no follow back,” Baker admitted.
“Tried to slide into the DMs — no response. At this point, I’m feeling pretty rejected. Finally, you gave [our friend] the OK that I could get your number.”

Thankfully, persistence paid off. The two eventually went out for lunch — and instantly hit it off. “The entire time he was asking questions about me, about my family. It was not the Baker show,” Emily said, smiling.
After that first date, both Baker and Emily told their friends and families that they had finally met the person they were going to marry.
The pair got engaged six months later and tied the knot in July 2019. Baker and Emily announced their pregnancy in an Instagram post on December 4, 2023 writing, “We’ve been hiding a little something……..
But we are THRILLED to share that baby girl Mayfield will be joining our crazy crew in early April 2024!”. Their child, Kova Jade Mayfield, was born on April 9, 2024.

Mayfield spoke to Sports Spectrum about welcoming their child to the world saying, “I think when you’re trying to have kids, or your significant other is pregnant, everybody’s like, ‘Just wait until you see that child for the first time, you don’t know that love’. “You hear it so many times, and you’re like, ‘Yeah, I get it.’ But [the] first time I saw her, that’s like, ‘OK, now I understand it and what that pure love is.’ It just turned our world upside down. It’s so special.”
