NBA rookie Kam Jones, who is currently playing for the Indiana Pacers, was arrested for speeding, allegedly telling police he went above the speed limit because he was “late for practice.”

Indiana State Police claimed that Jones, 23, was driving erratically on Interstate 65 in Indianapolis on Monday, October 20, just before 10 a.m., according to People. The athlete did not initially stop when troopers tried to pull him over, which led police officers to briefly chase him, per local NBC affiliate WTHR-TV and Fox 59.

Once Jones eventually pulled over, he was taken to Marion County Jail on preliminary charges of misdemeanor reckless driving and felony resisting law enforcement, according to the reports.

Before the chase began, an Indiana state trooper allegedly saw Jones’ black Cadillac driving 90 mph in a 50 mph zone. According to legal documents viewed by the outlets, authorities said the driver was “rapidly changing lanes” and was tailgating other cars.

“I certainly know that there was a fully marked Indiana State Police car with red and blue lights on behind him and sirens to try to pull him over and he didn’t stop,” ISP Sgt. John Perrine told Fox 59 of the incident.

Once Jones finally stopped, he told police he “did not know he was speeding and was running late for practice for the Indiana Pacers.”

A representative for the Pacers later said in a statement to Fox 59 that they were “aware of a situation involving Kam Jones.”

“We are in the process of gathering additional information and will not have any additional comment on the matter at this time,” the team added.

Meanwhile, Jones broke his silence on the arrest in a statement hours after his arrest.

“I’m deeply sorry to the Pacers organization and the fans,” Jones said during a post-practice media session, according to the Indy Star. “This was a very, very traumatic experience for me. I’ve never been through anything like this, but definitely a mistake that I’ve learned from. … It won’t happen again. I’m deeply sorry to the organization and I’m looking forward to letting this one go past and get back to work.”

Jones joined the NBA when he was selected in the second round of the 2025 draft. He was initially selected by the San Antonio Spurs, though he was ultimately traded to the Pacers.

The athlete is currently sidelined after suffering a back injury. However, he is expected to make his debut on the team’s G League affiliate, the Noblesville Boom, according to WTHR.
