A North Carolina man was arrested and is facing two felony charges after he allegedly assaulted two emergency personnel and exposed them to HIV.

Kameron Gilchrist was charged with two counts of assault or affray causing physical injury to emergency room personnel, according to a copy of his arrest warrant viewed by People.

If Gilchrist, 25, is convicted of the Class H felony, he could face up to 39 months in prison for each count. Class H felonies “are the second-to-the-lowest in the class ranking,” according to Sparrow Law Firm. “This is a low level felony, and may not carry mandatory jail time. Property-related crimes such as felony larceny, embezzlement and obtaining property via false pretenses can be considered low-level felonies.”

The incident took place on March 21 at the University of North Carolina’s Rex Hospital in Raleigh, North Carolina.

According to the warrant, Gilchrist allegedly “unlawfully, willfully and feloniously did assault a hospital employee … by spraying HIV blood into the eyes of victim” while he was receiving treatment at the hospital. As a result of this, two people were exposed to HIV and experienced irritation in their eyes.

The male and female victims were “discharging [their] official duties” at the time of the assault, according to the warrant.

It is not currently clear why authorities waited to file charges against Gilchrist six months after the incident took place.

While a spokesperson for UNC Rex Health told People that the hospital could not comment on employees, they did tell the outlet, “Unfortunately, violent situations and threats of violence against health workers have become more common across the country.”

Gilchrist is currently being held at the Wake County Detention Center on a $25,000 bond. He has not entered a plea of time of publication, while he is scheduled to appear back in court on December 8.
