Taylor Swift Says She Won’t Perform at the Super Bowl While Travis Kelce Is Still In the NFL

Taylor Swift may be taking over the world one stadium at a time — but there’s one stage she has no plans to conquer while Travis Kelce is still playing: the Super Bowl halftime show.

While the coveted performance is one of the few boxes the 14-time Grammy winner hasn’t checked off in her career, Taylor made it clear she’s not interested in taking it on anytime soon. During her October 6 appearance on The Tonight Show, the pop superstar explained that her decision has everything to do with where her focus is right now — and that’s fully on Travis.

“Here’s the thing, Jay-Z has always been very good to me,” Taylor said of the Roc Nation founder, who helps produce the halftime show. “Our teams are really close. They sometimes will call and say, ‘How does she feel about the Super Bowl?’ And that’s not an official offer or like a conference room conversation—we’re really close, it’s like, ‘How does she feel about it in general?’”

Taylor explained that she’s always honest about why the timing doesn’t work. “We’re always able to tell him the truth, which is that I am in love with a guy who does that sport on that field. That is violent chess, that is gladiators without swords. That is dangerous. I am, the whole season, I am locked in on what that man is doing on the field.”

Performing during the biggest football game of the year would simply be too much to juggle. “Can you imagine if he’s out there every single week,” she continued, “putting his life on the line, doing this very dangerous, very high pressure, high intensity sport—and I’m like, ‘I wonder what my choreo should be? I think we should do two verses of ‘Shake It Off,’ into ‘Blank Space,’ into ‘Cruel Summer’ would be great.’”

The Life of a Showgirl artist made it clear the decision is entirely her own. “This has nothing to do with Travis. He would love for me to do it. I’m just too locked in,” Taylor added.

Of course, the superstar has plenty of other major events on her plate — including her upcoming wedding to the Kansas City Chiefs tight end. During an October 3 appearance on The Graham Norton Show, Taylor admitted she hasn’t started planning in earnest yet, but she already knows one thing for sure: “It’s going to be huge.”

“I’m so excited about it,” she said. “I know it’s gonna be fun to plan because I think the only stressful weddings are the ones where you have a small amount and people are on the bubble.”

Rather than narrowing down the guest list, Taylor plans to go big and invite everyone. “It’s gonna be fun,” she summed up.
