Ryan Murphy Is Considering Making ‘Monster’ Season About Luigi Mangione

Ahead of the release of season 3 of Netflix’s true crime anthology series Monster, cocreator Ryan Murphy revealed he is considering making a season about Luigi Mangione.

While speaking to Variety in an interview published on Tuesday, September 30, about the upcoming season of the Netflix series, Murphy, 59, said that he and the show’s crew have a “maybe one day” file about cases they would like to document on the show. One of the cases he’s interested in depicting is that of Mangione, 27, who has been accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in December 2024.

However, Murphy admitted it will be a while before they can tell Mangione’s story because the case is still ongoing and there’s not much known about the suspect. “We know nothing about him,” Murphy told the outlet. “There was nothing to write — we didn’t have information yet. Maybe something will come out in the trial.”

Five days after Thompson was fatally shot in New York City, Mangione was arrested in Pennsylvania for his alleged involvement in the killing. Mangione was indicted on 11 state charges and four federal charges, including first-degree murder in furtherance of terrorism, criminal possession of a weapon, stalking and more, according to The Guardian.

In September, a New York judge dismissed the terror-related charges against Mangione after his lawyers argued the crime shouldn’t be considered an act of terrorism because only one person was targeted.

“While the People place great emphasis on defendant’s ‘ideological’ motive, there is no indication in the statute that a murder committed for ideological reasons (in this case, the defendant’s apparent desire to draw attention to what he perceived as inequities or greed within the American health care system), fits within the definition of terrorism without establishing the necessary element of an intent to intimidate or coerce,” Judge Gregory Carro wrote in his decision to dismiss the two terror-related charges, according to CNN.

Mangione has pleaded not guilty to the charges against him, and his trial is scheduled to begin on December 1.

Murphy teased a potential Monster season about Mangione just days before season 3, which is about serial killer Ed Gein, is set to premiere on Friday, October 3. The first season followed the crimes of Jeffrey Dahmer, while season 2 broke down Lyle Menendez and Erik Menendez’s crime of killing their parents.

While speaking to Variety, Murphy said he wanted to tell Gein’s story as a way to “provoke” conversations about topics such as the root of the ongoing mental-health crisis in the United States.
