Emily Henry Book Adaptations Guide: From ‘People We Meet on Vacation’ to ‘Funny Story’

By Andrew Jones 10/01/2025

Fans of Emily Henry have plenty to look forward to: not one, not two, but five of the bestselling author’s novels are being adapted for film and television.

The first adaptation announced was People We Meet on Vacation, picked up by 3000 Pictures in 2022. Henry confirmed the news on Instagram with a simple caption: “how’s everyone’s Tuesday.” Before the movie even hit production, three more of her novels were snapped up for film adaptations, while one was slated to become a Netflix series. In 2023, she shared her gratitude on social media:

“Feeling grateful for my beautiful life. Feeling warm and fuzzy about my readers and their funny comments and heartfelt messages and cute videos and thought provoking reviews. It is so scary and strange to be seen, but it is also so special, this weird and beautiful thing we have going on here.”

Here’s what fans can expect from the upcoming adaptations:

‘People We Meet on Vacation’

The Netflix adaptation of People We Meet on Vacation, directed by Brett Haley from Yulin Kuang’s screenplay, is set to release on January 9, 2026. The film follows polar opposites Alex and Poppy, who try to revive their annual vacation with one last trip together. Tom Blyth and Emily Bader star as Alex and Poppy.

In a behind-the-scenes video shared by Netflix on X, Henry told the actors she was nervous about the casting process:

“I just truly could not feel any more confident that my readers and then so many more people who don’t even know about the book are going to completely, completely fall in love with Poppy and Alex, with you guys playing them.”

The ensemble cast also includes Sarah Catherine Hook, Jameela Jamil, Lucien Laviscount, Lukas Gage and Molly Shannon.

‘Book Lovers’

Henry’s 2022 novel Book Lovers was picked up by Tango in March 2023. The story follows literary agent Nora, who repeatedly runs into brooding book editor Charlie while spending a holiday with her sister in a small town. Screenwriter Sarah Heyward (Girls) will pen the adaptation. Henry described the project as:

“Funny, cozy, moving, and messy,” adding that she “can’t wait” for it to come to life.

‘Beach Read’

Beach Read is being adapted by 20th Century Studios, with Yulin Kuang writing and directing. The novel tells the story of authors January Andrews and Augustus Everett, who become neighbors while on isolated writing retreats and agree to swap genres to overcome writer’s block. Fans have pushed for Paul Mescal in the cast, though Kuang said they are “not having those conversations” yet.

Bridgerton producer Leila Cohan will serve as showrunner, though casting has yet to be announced.

‘Funny Story’

Henry announced she is adapting her 2024 novel Funny Story into a screenplay for Lyrical Media and Ryder Picture Company. The story follows children’s librarian Daphne, whose fiancé dumps her for his childhood best friend. She moves in with Petra’s ex-boyfriend, Miles, and together they concoct a fake dating scheme to make their exes jealous.
