Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban Separate After 19 Years — Why Reports Are Saying It Was Keith’s Decision

After nearly two decades of marriage, Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban have gone their separate ways — and insiders say the heartbreaking split was anything but mutual.

The couple’s separation was first reported by TMZ, with sources telling the outlet that the Oscar-winning actress, 58, and the country superstar, 57, have been living apart “since the beginning of summer.” While Keith has been busy touring, Nicole has been at home in Nashville with their daughters, 17-year-old Sunday Rose and 14-year-old Faith Margaret. “Nicole has been holding the family together through this difficult time since Keith has been gone,” a source told TMZ.

But according to multiple reports, the split wasn’t Nicole’s choice. “She didn’t want this,” a source told People. “She has been fighting to save the marriage.” Another insider echoed that Keith has already “acquired his own residence in Nashville and has moved out of their family home.”

Just days before the news broke, Nicole was photographed wearing her wedding ring at the Clé de Peau Beauté: The Key To Radiance Is You event in Los Angeles on September 25. She stunned in a sleek black column dress accessorized with gold jewelry and, most notably, her original engagement band. The timing left many fans shocked that the actress was still showing her ring so soon before the split was confirmed.

As she navigates the separation, Nicole has been leaning on her inner circle — especially her younger sister. “Nicole’s sister [Antonia] has been a rock and the entire Kidman family has come together to support one another,” the People insider shared.

The couple’s relationship has had its ups and downs for years. Nicole herself admitted to Harper’s Bazaar in 2021 that marriage required effort. “We’re always working through stuff, but it’s very much love-based, so there’s an enormous amount of give and take. I want him to have the best life he can have, and he responds the same way.”

Nicole and Keith first met in 2005 at a Los Angeles gala, where she was charmed by his heartfelt speech about his mother. Despite Nicole’s instant interest, she admitted, “He actually wasn’t that interested in me at the time — which he now says is not true; he was just sort of intimidated.” Four months later, fate — and some matchmaking friends — reconnected them, leading to their 2006 oceanside wedding in Sydney.

They went on to welcome Sunday in 2008 and Faith in 2010, expanding the family Nicole already shared with her adopted children Isabella and Connor, from her previous marriage to Tom Cruise.
