The town of El Paso previously made national headlines in April when Patrick Crusius pleaded guilty to capital murder after killing 23 people in a racist attack at a Walmart in 2019, according to The Guardian.
Crusius was sentenced to life in prison without parole for the killings, which was one of the deadliest mass shootings in US history.

He previously acknowledged he targeted Hispanics during the shooting at the Walmart parking lot on August 3, 2019, which was crowded with weekend shoppers from both the US and Mexico due to the close proximity to the border.
El Paso county district attorney James Montoya chose to not pursue the death penalty because the majority of victims’ relatives wanted the case to be over, per The Guardian.
Prior to the April court hearing, Crusius had already been sentenced to serve 90 consecutive life terms at the federal level in 2023 after he pleaded guilty to hate crimes and weapons charges, per the U.S. Department of Justice.
