3 Officers Dead, 2 Seriously Injured While Responding to Investigation in Pennsylvania

Three officers are dead and two are seriously injured after shots were fired when they responded to an investigation in York County, Pennsylvania, on Wednesday, September 17.

A York County Office of Emergency Management representative told reporters that York County received a 9-1-1 call at 2:10 p.m. about a “police incident in North Codorus Township,” according to CBS Philadelphia.

“Numerous police and EMS units responded to the scene” after the call, according to the rep.

Later in the day on September 17, Colonel Christopher L. Paris, the commissioner of the Pennsylvania State Police, said during a press conference that there are “many details” officials are not prepared to release about the incident due to the ongoing nature of the investigation.

“That having been said, we’d like to advise the community that there is no current active threat,” Paris said. “The situation today involved law enforcement officers who were shot. I can confirm that the shooter is dead.”

Paris also confirmed that there were “five law enforcement officers who were shot” during the incident. “Three fatally [and] two that were transported here to WellSpan in York,” he said. “They are currently listed in critical but stable condition.”

Despite confirming the deaths and injuries, Paris did not reveal which departments the deceased and injured officers belonged to at the request of the district attorney.

Paris went on to explain that the officers were at the scene “to follow up on an investigation that began yesterday.” He did not share any further details about the investigation, though said it was “domestic-related” and explained the police shot the shooter.

All official statements will be released by law enforcement agencies leading the incident command at the scene.”

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro took to X later in the day to confirm he had been briefed on the situation. “I’ve been briefed on the situation involving law enforcement in York County, and am on my way there now,” he wrote. “We ask those in the area to please follow the directions of local law enforcement and @PAStatePolice.”
